Ma Chongfang

Prof. Ma Chongfang, male, born in 1940 in Ningbo city, Zhejiang province. He is now vice director of the Expert Committee of the National Innovation Association of Solar Energy Thermal Application, vice director of the Academic Committee of the Key Laboratory of Enhanced Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation, Ministry of Education, vice director of the Academic Committee ofthe Key Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion, Beijing Municipality, and deputy chief editor of the Journal of Engineering Thermophysics. He was formerly president of the College of Environmental and Energy Engineering, Beijing University of Technolog, director of the Key Laboratory of Enhanced Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation, Ministry of Education and director of the Key Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion, Beijing Municipality, vice president of the Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics, and member of the 3rd Consultant Expert Team of the 973 Program.

He graduated from Chinese University of Science and Technology in 1964 and graduated from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1967. From 1981 to 1984 he was engaged in fundamental studies on enhanced heat transfer under the internationally well-known Prof. Bergles, and worked since as visiting scholar or professor in Carnegie Mellon University and Brigham Young University. He also worked as visiting Professor in Warsaw University of Technology (Poland), the Institute of Thermophysics of the Russian Academy, Kyushu University (Japan), Sophia University (Japan), lasting 6 years. He has also been invited to give lectures or present academic reports at many universities over twenty odd overseas countries.
His research efforts focus mainly on efficient heat-work conversion of low temperature heat sources, concentrated solar power generation, single screw compressor/expander technology, building energy conservation, heat pump technology, molten salts heat transfer and heat storage, boiling heat transfer and jet impact heat transfer, cooling technique for electronic systems, heat transfer in diesel engines, fuel cells, anit-fouling technology etc. He has been granted many key projects and projects from 973 Program, 863 Program, National Natural Science Foundation, Beijing Natural Science Foundation, as well as from Beijing Municipal Commission of Science and Technology and various ministries and different provinces. In addition to six other awards in science and technology he has won, the project of “National high precision temperature source using air-controlled heat pipe” (in which he ranked the second) won the second prize of the National Scientific Achievement Award. He has published 4 monographs and translated 10 books. He has delivered 237 academic papers in English, among which 132 papers were cited in SCI. He was also member of the editor boards of many English academic journals, such as the Journal of Enhanced Heat Transfer, International Journal of Low Carbon Technologies, Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China. He has entitled to 36 patents of invention (2 in US, 34 in China). In 1995, he wrote the chapter “Uniphase Jet Impact Heat Transfer” for the famous journal of “Advances in Heat Transfer”, and thus became the unique author of the journal in mainland China. He was in charge of compiling “The Report on the Development of Thermophysics— the Part on the Mass Transfer and Heat Transfer, 2007-2008, 2009-2010”, he wrote “Key consultant research report on the development of the strategic emerging industry in the 12th five-year plan period — the energy conservation industry”. In 2002 he wrote “Review on the environmental impacts of China energy consumption”, which was part of “High Technology Development in 2002, Report by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2003, he participated in compiling “The assessment system of the Green Olympic”. He was also a main drafter of some national standards: “Cleaning standard of air-conditioning and ventilation system, GB19210-2003”, “Energy efficiency limits and energy efficiency level for positive displacement compressors, GB19153-2009” and “The oil-cooling single screw air compressors for general use, GB/T26967-2011”.

Since the beginning of new century, Prof. Ma and his team have concentrated their efforts on the single screw compression/expansion and molten salt heat transfer and storage, resulting not only in publication of series of papers in academic journals but also in the engineering application and commercialization of these high technologies. In 2011 the first single screw expander in the world was produced at Beijing University of Technology. In 2016 the first in the world large scale demonstration project of centralized building heating by molten salt heat storage was put into practice in Xinji City, Hebei Province. Both the advancements not only attract wide interests among domestic and overseas academic circles but also provide new direction for the development of energy industry and promising solution for the problem of smog in China.
